Abstract
Background: The factors for predicting aging-related muscle loss are not clearly identified. The aim of this study is to examine factors associated with muscle loss in Korean older adults.

Methods: We assessed 329 subjects aged 60 years and older who participated in the health checkup programs twice in one to two years¡¯ time period. Muscle loss group was defined as those with 5% or more decrease in fat-free mass. The biomarkers were compared between the muscle loss and non- loss groups adjusting for potential confounders.

Results: The number of subject in muscle loss group was 30 (9.1%). Serum albumin concentration was significantly lower in the muscle loss group than that in the non-loss group. Based on the ROC curve results, serum albumin was the predictor of muscle loss (Area Under Curve=0.656). Multivariate regression results presented the odds ratio of 1 standard deviation of baseline albumin level for the muscle loss was 0.446 (95% confidence intervals 0.271-0.734, P=0.001).

Conclusion: Baseline serum concentrations of albumin may be a significant indicator to predict muscle mass loss in Korean adults aged 60 years and older.
